The more I watched Masterchef, and the further the competition proceeded towards its exciting denouement, the more it became apparent to me that the chefs who consistently came out top (and the one who eventually won the competition, Ash Mair), all had their “skills sets” perfected.
As the competition progresses, the tasks become more challenging. They must also prepare a classic dish, set by Michael Roux Jr, as well as cooking and serving a two-course meal for food critics. In order to progress through the contest, the participants must complete a variety of tests, including skills tests which examine things like the ability to joint a bird correctly, prepare a lobster or make Hollandaise sauce (three ways). Many of the dishes they submit to the highly discriminating judges are amazing: creative, imaginative and beautifully prepared. The programme features some very talented individuals.

So how can a cookery tv game show (which is how Masterchef began nearly 20 years ago) provide inspiration to the pianist, and musician in general? This time this year I am once again immersed in Diploma preparations (for the higher LTCL), and nightly glued to Masterchef the Professionals. I was also hooked on Masterchef the Professionals, a BBC TV competition for working chefs. This time last year I was in the midst of final preparations for my ATCL Performance Diploma. People who know me well – and who have eaten at my dinner table – probably feel it was inevitable that I would eventually combine my twin passions of food and pianism in a blog post.

I would love to have your suggestions, which I will then collate into a further blog post exploring this theme. And it set me thinking about what the equivalent skills would be for a pianist. One thing that has puzzled both of us is how these chefs seem to lack basic skills, skills which one would expect them to have mastered within the first few years of their training (my son, for example, who is in the second year of his diploma course, learnt to make Omelette Arnold Bennett in his first year). Of course in the TV spotlight and under the eagle-eyed stare of Michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing, nerves can get the better of the contestants and mistakes inevitably happen….ĭuring last year’s contest, I enjoyed lively conversations on Twitter with pianist and writer Susan Tomes, and once again we are exchanging thoughts about the competition. For a “classically trained” chef, these tests shouldn’t present too many problems, as many of these skills and dishes are standard fare in the chef’s basic training. I admit to being glued to the programme every night, and this year I’m watching even more attentively as my son is training to be a chef (and of course this proud mum would love to see him on the programme in the future….)Īt the start of the competition, the chefs undergo a variety of “skills tests”, including making brandy snaps, boning, trimming and tying up a joint of meat, preparing a lobster or crab, or making the classic Omelette Arnold Bennett.
